Question

To a buffer solution of CH3COOH and CH3COONa, some HCl is added. Then the reaction involved is

Easy
Solution

Following is the given buffer,

\mathop {C{H_3}COOH}\,\,\,\,\,\, \rightleftharpoons \,\,\,\,\mathop {C{H_3}CO{O^ - }}+ \mathop {H^ + }

\mathop {C{H_3}COONa}\ \,\,\,\,\,\, \rightleftharpoons \,\,\,\,\mathop {C{H_3}CO{O^ - }} + \mathop {H^ + }

Incoming H+ ion from HCl, whichis acidic, will be neutralised by the conjugate base CH3COO- present in the buffer via the following reaction.

C{H_3}CO{O^ - }\, + \,{H^ + }\, \to \,C{H_3}COO\,H
