Question

By passing electric current, NaClO3 is converted in to NaClO4 according to the following equation

\large NaCl{O_3}\, + \,{H_2}O\, \to \,NaCl{O_4} + \,{H_2}

.How many moles of NaClO4 will be formed when three faradays of charge is passed through NaClO3 ?

Moderate
Solution

NaCl{O_3} + {H_2}O \to NaCl{O_4} + {H_2}

In NaClO3 oxidation state of Cl is +5

In NaClO4 oxidation state of Cl is +7

Change in oxidation state of Cl is  7 - 5 = 2

1 mole of NaClO3 requires 2 mole of electrons to produce 1 mole of NaClO4

\begin{array}{l} 2F\,\,produces\,\,\,1\,mole\,\,of\,\,NaCl{O_4}\\ 3F\,\,produces\,\, = \frac{3}{2} = 1.5\,mole\,\,of\,\,NaCl{O_4} \end{array}
