When open end up, the weight of mercury represents an increase in the pressure on the gas of 4.00 cm Hg = 4omm Hg

 Final pressure =760+40=800mmHg

p1V1=p2V2p1×A×I1=p2×A×l2

where, A is the area of cross-section (which is constant) and l1, l2 length

 p1×11=p2×I2

760×10=800×l2l2=9.50cm
