Orthoboric acid
Question

A compound H3BO3 is heated with C2H5OH and H2SO4, the fumes produced burn with green flame.The green flame is due to the formation of

Moderate
Solution

\mathop {B{{(OH)}_3}}\limits_{Ortho\,boric\,\,acid} + \mathop {3{C_2}{H_5}OH}\limits_{Ethyl\,\,alcohol} \xrightarrow{{Conc.{H_2}S{O_4}}}\mathop {B{{(O{C_2}{H_5})}_3}}\limits_{Triethyl\,\,\,borate}

When ortho boric acid is burnt with ethyl alcohol in presence of Conc H2SO4 gives triethyl ortho borate.

When the vapours of triethyl borate ignited burn with a green edged flame.The green edged flame is due to the combustion of ethyl borate.

This test is used to detect the borates and boric acid in qualitative analysis.
