Question

Consider the following perhalate ions in acidic medium

ClO4(I),BrO4(II),IO4(III)

Arrange these in the decreasing order of oxidizing power

Moderate
Solution

Standard reduction potential (in volts) of the perhalate ions are given as below.

ClO4+2H++2eClO3+H2OEo=+1.19V

BrO4+2H++2eBrO3+H2OEo=+1.74V

IO4+2H++2eIO3+H2OEo=+1.65V

More the standard reduction potential more is tendency of perhalate ion to undergo reduction and more stronger it will be as an oxidising agent.
