Question

A dilute aqueous solution of Na2SO4 is electrolysed using platinum electrodes. The products at the anode and cathode are

Easy
Solution

Pt electrodes are inert electrodes and does not under go any chemical change.

In aq. solution of Na2SO4 :

N{a_2}S{O_4} \rightleftharpoons 2N{a^ + } + SO_4^{ - 2}

At Cathode : Discharge potential of H2O < Na+ or SRP of H2O > Na+

H2O undergoes reduction.

2{H_2}O + 2{e^ - } \rightleftharpoons {H_2} + 2O{H^ - }

At Anode : Discharge potential of   H_{2}O\;< SO_{4}^{-2},H2O undergoes oxidation.

2{H_2}O \rightleftharpoons 4{H^ + } + 4{e^ - } + {O_2}
