Solution

Burning any substance in excess of oxygen is called combustion;
Carbon on burning in excess of oxygen gives carbon dioxide ;
Carbon when burnt in insufficient supply of oxygen gives carbon monoxide ;
Thus (3) cannot be called as a combustion ;
