Solution

In the case of carbon reacting with dioxygen.
$C + \frac{1}{2} O_{2} ⟶ CO$
two volumes of CO for every one volume of dioxygen used. Thus $∆ S$ is positive and hence $∆ G$ becomes increasingly negative as temperature increases. Consequently the line on Ellingham diagram slope downwards.
