Detailed Solution
Most of the gases undergo cooling when subjected to adiabatic unrestricted expansion carried out below the inversion temperature of the gas. This effect is called Joule-Thompson effect. At ordinary temperature, hydrogen behaves ideally due to lack of intermolecular forces. The critical temperature of hydrogen is very low. Furthermore, the inversion temperature of hydrogen is around 200K. Ordinary temperatures are likely to be above its inversion temperature. So, when hydrogen gas is subjected to unhindered expansion, the temperature remains above its inversion temperature and so it undergoes heating.
