Uses of Boron & Aluminium
Question

Hydrogen gas is liberated when aluminium is treated with
A) Air
B) Dilute HCl (or) H2SO4
C) NaOH (or) KOH
D) conc. HNO3

Easy
Solution

→ Al metal is stable in dry air due to the formation of protective oxide layer on its surface. Therefore H2 gas is not liberated when Al is treated with air.

2Al + 6HCl \to AlC{l_3} + 3{H_2} \uparrow

2Al + 3{H_2}S{O_4} \to A{l_2}{(S{O_4})_3} + 3{H_2} \uparrow

2Al + 2NaOH \to \mathop {2NaAl{O_2}}\limits_{Sodium\,\,\,metaaluminate} + {H_2} \uparrow

→ Al is passive or reluctant to the action of Conc.HNO3 due to the formation of protective oxide layer on its surface in presence of Conc.HNO3.
