PH of strong acids and strong bases

Question

To a one litre solution containing 8 grams of sodium hydroxide, 14.7 grams of sulphuric acid is added. p^{H} of the solution at 298 K is

Moderate

Solution

Number of gram equivalents of base = 8/40 = 0.2

Number of gram equivalents of acid = 14.7/49 = 0.3

Nature of resultant solution is acidic

Number of gram equivalents of acid left = (0.3 - 0.2)

$\begin{array}{c}\therefore \left[{\mathrm{H}}^{+}\right]=0.1\times \frac{1}{1}\\ \left[{\mathrm{H}}^{+}\right]=0.1\mathrm{M}\\ {\mathrm{p}}^{\mathrm{H}}=1\end{array}$
