Serpeck's process is used to purify bauxite which contains silica as impurity. Powdered ore is mixed with coke and heated to 1800∘C in a current of nitrogen. Silicon dioxide is reduced to silicon vapor and escapes while Al is converted to aluminium nitride which is further hydrolysed.
