Question

The products of electrolysis of aqueous NaCl solution are

Easy
Solution

2NaCl \rightleftharpoons 2N{a^ + } + 2C{l^ - }

At cathode;

Discharge potential of H2O is less than Na+ or SRP of H2O is greater than Na+.H2O is preferentially reduced.

2{H_2}O + 2{e^ - } \rightleftharpoons {H_2} + 2O{H^ - }

At Anode :

Discharge potential of H2O is less than Cl- or SOP of H2O is greater than Cl-.Cl is preferentially Oxidised.

2C{l^ - } \rightleftharpoons C{l_2} + 2{e^ - }

Note: If the electrolyte is very dilute insted of Cl2 at anode O2 is liberated at anode.
