Detailed Solution
(1) Function of CaCl2 is to lower the melting point of NaCl melt from 8000°C to 6000°C. Since at high temperature of NaCl melt Na and Cl2 (obtained by electrolysis) corrodes the tank and also forms Na metallic fog.(2) Be (2s2) does not have vacant orbitals. Thus cannot accommodate more than 8e-s hence does not show covalency beyond four.(3) Due to the evolution of HCI(g), BeCl2 fumes in moist air BeCl2+2H2O⟶Be(OH)2+2HCl(4) Dehydration is carried out in current of HCI solution since HCI gas arrests the hydrolysis of MgCl2 by its one water of crystallization.
