Borax
Question

What is the nature of aqueous borax solution ?

Easy
Solution

The aqueous solution of borax is alkaline in nature.

\mathop {N{a_2}{B_4}{O_7}}\limits_{Borax} + 2{H_2}O \to \mathop {2NaOH}\limits_{Strong\,base} + \mathop {\mathop {4{H_2}{B_4}{O_7}}\limits_{Weak\,acid} }\limits_{Tetra\,boric\,acid}

                                                 OR

\mathop {N{a_2}{B_4}{O_7}}\limits_{Borax} \to 2N{a^ + } + {B_4}O_7^{ - 2}

{B_4}O_7^{ - 2} + 2{H_2}O \to {H_2}{B_4}{O_7} + \mathop {2O{H^ - }}\limits_{Alkaline}

Anion of weak acid only undergoes hydrolysis but cation of strong base cannot undergo hydrolysis.

→ During anionic hydrolysis   {O{H^ - }} ions released to the solution therefore the solution is basic or alkaline in nature.
