Detailed Solution
Like O2 , S2 molecule is also paramagnetic.Rhombic sulfur melts at 113∘C while monoclinic sulfur melts at 119∘C . On heating above these temperatures, the viscosity of sulfur increases till 200∘C and after that viscosity decreases. The reason for such behavior is cited as follows. Till 200∘C , long S-S chains can be maintained i.e., S8 molecules exists in majority as vapors. After 200∘C , S8 units breaks into S6, S4 and S2 .At 600∘C , sulfur mainly consists of S2 units. At very high temperatures, atomic sulfur persists. In many compounds, sulfur exhibits an oxidation state of less than 4. For example, in hydrogen sulfide, sulfur exhibits an oxidation state of -2.
