Solution

Brown ring test is used to confirm the presence of nitrate ion in the solution. To a solution of nitrate salt freshly prepared FeSO₄ is added and then conc. H₂SO₄ is slowly added through the walls of test tube by keeping the test tube inclined. A brown ring formed at the junction of two solutions indicate the presence of ${NO}_{3}^{-}$ ion in the solution.
Formula of brown ring is [Fe(H₂O)₅NO]⁺² .
