The extent of protection shown by lyophilic colloid is given by value of its gold number.The minimum number of milligrams of lyophilic colloid that must be added to 10 ml of  gold sol to prevent its coagulation when 1 ml of 10% NaCl is added to it is called gold number.More is the gold number, less is the protective power of the lyophilic colloid since it means that the amount required is more.Gelatin has lowest gold number hence it is the best protecting colloid.
