The equation of the straight line which passes through the point (1, - 2) and cuts off equal intercepts from the axes will be

Solution

Let the line be $\frac{x}{a} + \frac{y}{a} = 1$ . It passes through
$\begin{array}{l} (1, - 2) \\ ∴ \frac{1}{a} - \frac{2}{a} = 1 \Rightarrow a = - 1 \end{array}$
Hence, the equation of the line is $x + y = - 1 .$
