Question

If odds against solving a question by three students are 2:1, 5:2 and 5:3,respectively, then probability that the question is solved only by one student is

Moderate
Solution

The probabilities of solving the question by these three students are 1/3 ,2/7 and 3/8, respectively. Therefore,

P(A)=13;P(B)=27;P(C)=38

Then probability of question solved by only one student is

P((A B C  or A B C or A B C))

=P(A)P(B)P(C)+P(A)P(B)P(C)+P(A)P(B)P(C)

=13×57×58+23×27×58+23×57×38=25+20+30168=2556
