Question

If the system of linear equations,

x+y+z=6

x+2y+3z=10

3x+2y+λz=μ

has more than two solutions, then μ-λ2 is equal to ______________

Difficult
Solution

x+y+z=6_____(1)

x+2y+3z=10_____(2)

3x+2y+λz=μ_____(3)

from (1) and (2)

If  z=0x+y=6and  x+2y=10y=4,x=2

 2,4,0 is a solution of the given system

          If y=0x+z=6 and x+3z=10

        z=2   andx=4

4,0,2 is a solution of the given system

   Now equation (3) must satisfy the solutions 2,4,0and  4,0,2.

μ=14, and 12+2λ=μλ=1

 μλ2=141= 13
