If $[\begin{array}{cc} x + 3 & 2 y + x \\ z - 1 & 4 w - 8 \end{array}] = [\begin{array}{cc} - x - 1 & 0 \\ 3 & 2 w \end{array}]$ then find the value of $| x + y | + | z + w |$

Solution

As the given matrices are equal so their corresponding elements are equal.
$x + 3 = - x - 1 \Rightarrow 2 x = - 4 - - - - (i)$
$\begin{array}{l} ∴ x = - 2 \\ 2 y + x = 0 \\ \Rightarrow 2 y - 2 = 0 [from Eq . (i)] \\ \Rightarrow y = 1 - - - - (ii) \\ z - 1 = 3 \\ \Rightarrow z = 4 - - - - (iii) \\ 4 w - 8 = 2 w \\ \Rightarrow 2 w = 8 \\ w = 4 - - - - - (iv) \end{array}$
Hence, $| x + y | + | z + w | = | - 2 + 1 | + | 4 + 4 | = 1 + 8 = 9$
