Definition of a circle
Question

The locus of the centre of a circle touching the lines

x + 2y = 0 and x - 2y = 0, is

Moderate
Solution

Let (h, k) be the center and r be the radius of the circle. As it touches the lines x + 2y = 0 and x - 2y = 0.

 h+2k5=h2k5= Radius

    h+2k=±(h2k)    k=0 or ,h=0

 Locus of (h, k) is x = 0 or, y = 0

Hence, the locus of (h, k) is xy = 0.
