Arranging the given data in ascending order, we have 34,38, 42,44, 46, 48, 54, 55, 63,70,
median, $M = \frac{46 + 48}{2} = 47$ $(∵ n = 10$ , median is the mean of 5th and 6th items)
$∴$ mean deviation $= \frac{Σ |x_{i} - M|}{n}$
$\begin{array}{l} = \frac{Σ |x_{i} - 47|}{10} \\ = \frac{13 + 9 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 7 + 8 + 16 + 23}{10} \\ = 8 .6 \end{array}$
