Given equation is $x^{2} + | x | - 6 = 0$
$\Rightarrow {| x |}^{2} + | x | - 6 = 0$

$\Rightarrow (| x | + 3) (| x | - 2) = 0$

$\Rightarrow | x | = - 3 o r 2 b u t | x | \geq 0,$

Therefore, $| x | = 2 \Rightarrow x = - 2 o r 2.$

Hence, the sum of the roots $= - 2 + 2 = 0$
