There are two vibrational degree of freedom of diatomic gas molecules at high temperature , one is kinetic mode and the other is potential mode. At low temperature the atoms of a diatomic gas are assumed to be connected to each other by a massless rigid rod, at high temperature this rod behaves like a spring and the atoms start vibrating .
