Solution

When the balls are released, the force experienced by mass m is ma. This is the force exerted by mass M on mass m. The mass m will also exert an equal force ma on M (Newton's third law). So, the acceleration of mass M is given by
$a^{'} = \frac{F}{M} = \frac{ma}{M} .$
