A ball of mass m moving at a speed v makes a head-on collision with an identical ball at rest. The kinetic energy of the balls after the collision is 3/4th of the original. If the coefficient of restitution is e, find the value of e2.

v1=1+e2v and v2=1e2v

Given that Kf=34Ki

 or  12mv12+12mv22=3412mv2

Substituting the values, we get 1+e22+1e22=34

 or  (1+e)2+(1e)2=3 or 2+2e2=3

 or  e2=12 or e=12
