Question

A balloon filled with Helium gas cannot continue to rise indefinitely. This happens because

Moderate
Solution

As the balloon rises, density and pressure of air decrease. As a result volume of the balloon increases. Buoyant force B=ρVg. Effect of decrease in density dominates over the effect of increase in volume. Hence buoyant force decreases and the balloon stops rising further.
