Question

A block of mass 10kg is moving in x direction with a constant speed of 10m/s. It is subjected to a retarding force F=-0.1xJ/m during its travel from x=20m to x=30m. Its final kinetic energy will be

Moderate
Solution

work done = change in KE F.S=KEfinal-KEinitial KEfinal=F.S+KEinitial ( here retarding force is negative) substitute given values KEfinal=(-0.1)(30-20)+12(10)102   KEfinal=499joule --------------------- second method:  initial velocity=u=10 m/s accelertion a=-Fm=-0.110=-0.01m/s2 displacement s=30-20=10m final velocity v=? equation of motion is      v2-u2=2as substitute given values v2=102-2(0.01)10 v2=99.8---(1) KEfinal=12mv2 substitute eqn(1) and given mass m=10kg KEfinal=12(10)(99.8)=499 J
