A bob of simple pendulum has mass $2 g$ and a charge $5 μ c$ . It is at rest in a uniform horizontal electric field of intensity $2000 V / m$ . At equilibrium, the angle that the pendulum makes with the vertical is

Solution

At equilibrium $T \sin θ = E q \to (1)$
and $T \cos θ = m g \to (2)$
by solving $\tan θ = \frac{E q}{m g}$
$\Rightarrow t a n θ = \frac{2000 \times 5 \times 10^{- 6}}{2 \times 10^{- 3} \times 10} \Rightarrow t a n θ = 0.5 \Rightarrow θ = t a n^{- 1} (0.5)$
