A body at rest explodes in to two fragments ratio of whose masses is 1 : 4. If kinetic energy of the lighter mass is 12 Joule, what is the kinetic energy of the heavier mass?

Solution

$m_{1} : m_{2} = 1 : 4$ By conservation of momentum $p_{1} = p_{2}$
Now $\frac{p_{1}^{2}}{2 m_{1}} = 12 J$ . So kinetic energy is inversely proportional to mass.
$\frac{k_{1}}{k_{2}} = \frac{m_{2}}{m_{1}} \frac{12}{k_{2}} = \frac{4}{1} k_{2} = 3 J$
