Solution

Linear momentum is conserved.
$a p p l y p r i n c i p l e o f c o n s e r v a t i o n o f l i n e a r m o m e n t u m ∴ 0 = m_{1} v_{1} + m_{2} v_{2} h e r e m_{1} = 4 k g; m_{2} = 12 k g; v_{2} = 4 m / s; s u b s t i t u t e$
$\Rightarrow 4 \times v_{1} + 12 \times 4 = 0 \Rightarrow v_{1} = - 12 m / s$

   $∴ K . E_{1} = \frac{1}{2} m_{1} {v_{1}}^{2} s u b s t i t u t e$
   $K . E_{1} = \frac{1}{2} (4) \times {(- 12)}^{2} K . E_{1} = 288 j o u l e$
