Question

A boy aims at a bird from a point at a horizontal distance of 100 m. The gun can impart a horizontal velocity of 500 m/s to the bullet. From what height above the bird, must he aim his gun in order to hit the bird? (Take g = 10m / s² )

Solution

R = 100 m, u = 500 m/s
$t = time taken = \frac{R}{u} = \frac{100}{500} = \frac{1}{5} \sec$
Now, $h = \frac{1}{2} {gt}^{2} = \frac{1}{2} \times 10 \times \frac{1}{25} m = \frac{1}{5} m = 20 cm$
