An A.C supply of 230 V is applied to a half wave rectifier circuit through a transformer of turn ratio 10 : 1. Find the output D.C voltage (approximately)

Solution

$F o r P r i m a r y V o l t a g e : R M S P r i m a r y V o l t a g e : V_{r m s} = 230 V,$
$∴ P e a l P r i m a r y V o l t a g e : V_{P} = \sqrt{2} \times V_{r m s} \Rightarrow V_{p} = \sqrt{2} \times 230 V = 325.3 V$
$P r i m a r y t o S e c o n d a r y t u r n r a t i o o f t r a n s f o r m e r : \frac{V_{p}}{V_{s}} = \frac{N_{p}}{N_{s}}$
$\Rightarrow \frac{325.3}{V_{s}} = \frac{10}{1} \Rightarrow V_{s} = 32.53 V$
$H e n c e, f o r h a l f w a v e r e c t i f i e r V_{d c} = \frac{V_{s}}{π} = \frac{32.53}{3.14} = 10.36 ≃ 10.4 V$
