Solution

When the two condensers ate connected in series
$C = \frac{2 \times 1}{2 + 1} = \frac{2}{3} μF and Q = \frac{2}{3} E$
The potential of condenser C₁ is given by
$\begin{aligned} V_{1} = \frac{Q}{C_{1}} = \frac{2}{3} E < 6 kV \\ ∴ E < 6 \times \frac{3}{3} or E < 9 kV \end{aligned}$
