A car travels 8 km along east, then 15 km along north and then $15 \sqrt{2}$ , km towards south-west. What will be the displacement from the starting point ?

Solution

Let the car start from point o as shown in figure. The distances covered by the car are also shown in the figure.
Finally the car reaches to point C. The displacement of the car from starting point is OC.
Here CA = ,AB = 15 km
or CO +OA = 15km
$∴ CO = 15 - OA = 15 - 8 = 7 km$
