Refrigerator
Question

A Carnot engine, having an efficiency of η = 1/10 as heat engine, is used as a refrigerator. If the work done on the system is 10J, the amount of energy absorbed from the reservoir at lower temperature is

Moderate
Solution

We know that coefficient of performance

K = \frac{{{Q_2}}}{W}

But 1 + K = \frac{1}{\eta };1 + K = \frac{1}{{\left( {\frac{1}{{10}}} \right)}} = 10

\therefore K = 9

K = 9 = \frac{{{Q_2}}}{W} \Rightarrow {Q_2} = 9W = 9 \times 10 = 90J
