Radio activity

Question

In a certain nuclear reactor, a radioactive nucleus is being produced at a constant rate =1000/s. The mean life of the radionuclide is 40 minutes. At steady state the number of radionuclide will be

Easy

Solution

at steady state. Rate of disintegration is equal to rate of production.

$1000=\mathrm{N\lambda \lambda}=\frac{1}{{\mathrm{T}}_{\mathrm{mean}}}$

$1000=\frac{\mathrm{N}}{40\times 60}$

$\mathrm{N}=40\times 60\times {10}^{3}=24\times {10}^{5}$
