Question

A compound microscope is used to enlarge an object kept at a distance 0.03m from its objective which consists of several convex lenses in contact and has focal length  0.02m. If a lens of focal length 0.1m is removed from the objective, find out the distance by which the eye piece of the microscope must be moved to refocus the image.

Difficult
Solution

From lens formula

1F=1v-1u10.02=1v+10.03v=0.06m=6cmLet say focal length of remaining combination is f'10.02=10.1+1f'f'=0.025m=2.5cmThe new position of image by objective lens is v'.Using lens formula,12.5=1v'-1-3v'=15cm Eye piece must be moved away from objective by 156=9cm
