Question

Compressibility of water is 5×1010m2/N. Find the decrease in volume (in mL) of 100 mL of water when subjected to a pressure of 15 MPa.

Moderate
Solution

The compressibility K is the reciprocal of the bulk modulus. K =PVV

Decrease in volume = vp v 1k

 ΔV=VΔp compressibility=(100mL)5×1010m2/N15×106N/m2=0.75mL

The decrease in volume is thus 0.75 mL.
