A copper conductor of fixed length has a variable cross sectional area. A battery of emf E is connected between the ends of the conductor. If $V_{d}$ represents average drift velocity of free electrons at a section of area A, then

Solution

$V_{d} = \frac{J}{n e} = \frac{(\frac{i}{A})}{n e} = (\frac{i}{n e}) \frac{1}{A}$
Since same current i is flowing through all sections of the conductor, we can conclude $V_{d} \propto \frac{1}{A}$
