A copper rod ABCD is bent in the form of a circular arc as shown in the figure and its two end are connected to the terminals of a battery. If drift velocity of free electrons at the edges AB and CD are V₁ and V₂ respectively, then

Solution

consider two arc like elements, each of cross sectional area $∆$ A, near the edges AB and CD.
Now $V_{d} = \frac{j}{n e} = \frac{E}{(ρ . \frac{l}{∆ A}) . ∆ A . n e} = \frac{E}{(ρ n e) l} \Rightarrow V_{d} \propto \frac{1}{l}$
since the arc length AB is greater than CD, we can conclude V₁ < V₂ .
