Question

A cubical block of copper of side 10 cm is floating in a vessel containing mercury. Water is poured into the vessel so that the copper block just gets submerged. The height of water column is

(ρHg = 13.6 g/cc, ρCu = 7.3g/cc, ρwater = 1 gm/cc)

Moderate
Solution

Let h = height of water column

then ρwgh+ρHgg(10-h) = ρCug10

 h + 13.6(10-h) = 73

 63 = 12.6h  h = 5 cm
