Pressure in a fluid-mechanical properties of fluids
Question

A cylinder fitted with piston as shown in figure. The cylinder is filled with water and is taken to a place where there is no gravity. Mass of the piston is 50 kg. The system is accelerated with acceleration 0.5 m/ sec2 in positive x-direction. Find the force exerted by fluid on the surface AB of the cylinder in decanewton. Take area of cross-section of cylinder to be 0.01 m2 and neglect atmospheric pressure (1 decanewton =10 N).

Moderate
Solution

 Force due to piston =50×0.5=25N

 Force due to fluid =(ρah)A=A(1000×5×0.5)

                                              =2500Pa×0.01m2=25N

Force on the surface AB=50N=5 decanewton
