When the rod is kept vertically, maximum stress is induced at its bottom most section.
$\begin{array}{l} ∴ σ_{\max} = \frac{mg}{A} = \frac{(ρ . Al) g}{A} = ρlg \\ \Rightarrow l = \frac{σ_{\max}}{ρg} = \frac{2000 \times 10^{4}}{8000 \times 10} m = 250 m \end{array}$
