Question

The density of water at the surface of ocean is ρ. If the bulk modulus of water is B, then the density of ocean water at depth, when the pressure is αp0 where p0 is the atmospheric pressure, is

Moderate
Solution

From the definition of bulk modulus

As we move from surface to place where pressure changes to αp0, let us assume volume changes by ΔV, then

B=VΔpΔV=V(α1)p0ΔV

 New volume, V'=VΔV=V1(α1)p0B

 Density at the given depth, ρ'=ρVV', where ρ is density at surface

ρ'=ρ×BB(α1)p0
