An electric dipole $\vec{p} = 8 \times 10^{- 9} \hat{i} C - m$ is placed at the origin. If electric field at a point $P (a, a)$ is E, what is the electric field at a point $Q (0, \sqrt{2} a)$

Solution

$E_{P} = \frac{1}{4 π \in_{0}} \frac{p}{r^{3}} \sqrt{1 + 3 \cos^{2} θ}$
Here $θ = 45^{o}$ and $γ = \sqrt{2} a$
$∴ E = \frac{1}{4 π \in_{0}} \frac{p}{{(\sqrt{2} a)}^{3}} . \sqrt{1 + \frac{3}{2}}$
$E = \frac{1}{4 π \in_{0}} \frac{p}{{(\sqrt{2} a)}^{3}} \sqrt{\frac{5}{2}}$
$∴ E_{Q} = \frac{1}{4 π \in_{0}} \frac{p}{{(\sqrt{2} a)}^{3}} = \sqrt{\frac{2}{5}} E$ .
