Electric potential at a point P on the axis of a short dipole is $4 \times 10^{- 3}$ volt. If distance of point P from the centre of the dipole is 10 cm, find the electric field at that point.

Solution

$V_{P} = \frac{1}{4 π \in_{0}} \frac{p}{r^{2}} and E_{P} = \frac{1}{4 π \in_{0}} \frac{2 p}{r^{3}} = \frac{2}{r} (\frac{1}{4 π \in_{0}} \frac{p}{r^{2}})$
$∴ E_{P} = \frac{2 V_{P}}{r} = \frac{2 \times 4 \times 10^{- 3}}{0.1} V / m = 0.08 V / m$
