Question

An elevator ascends with an upward acceleration of 0.2m/ s². At the instant its upward speed is 3m/ sec, a loose bolt 5m high from the floor of elevator drops from the celing of the elevator. Find the time untill the bolt strikes the floor

Solution

Relative acceleration is (9.8 + 0.2) = 10 m / s²
Relative initial velocity = 0
$t = \sqrt{\frac{2 h}{a}} = \sqrt{\frac{2 \times 5}{10}} = 1 \sec$
